History of Osmania Medical College

  • 1595: Foundation of Darush-Shifa hospital and medical school by Mohammad Quli Qutub Shah, teaching Unani medicine.
  • 1836–39: A medical school started at Bolarum by British surgeons for Deccan natives.
  • 1846: Hyderabad Medical School established by the 5th Nizam, Afzal ud Dowla, under Dr. William Campbell Maclean after successfully treating the Nizam. Urdu was the medium of instruction.
  • 1919–1920: Renamed Osmania Medical College following the establishment of Osmania University by the 7th Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan.
  • 1889: Rupa Bai Furdoonji, first qualified female anesthesiologist in the world, graduated.
  • 1957 onwards: Played a key role in modern medical education in the newly formed Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
