Jajpur district came into being on 1st April 1993. Prior to that it was part of Cuttack district which divided into four districts. The district is bounded by Keonjhar and Bhadrak districts on its north, Cuttack on its south, Dhenkanal district on its east and Kendrapada district on its west. The Jajpur district is located in between Latitude: 20° 50' 54.67" N and Longitude: 86° 20' 14.24" E. The district covering an area of 2887.69 Sq. Km is moderately populated having total population of 18,26,275. The district takes its name from its headquarter town, Jajpur.
In early 10th century Jajpur was formed by ‘Jajati Keshari’, the Somavanshi King. The history of the Jajpur district from time immemorial is synonymous with the Biraja and Biraja Khetra. Economy of the district is agrarian in nature. Agriculture and mining play dominant role in the economy of the district. In recent years, Jajpur district has taken major strides in industrial development. The most industrially developed area of the district, Kalinga Nagar, is situated in Danagadi Block with many steel plants belonging to Mesco, Neelachal Ispat, Tata Steels, Brahmani River Pellets Limited and Jindal Stainless Limited. Daitari mines of the district are famous for the mining extracts, which the state exports to the outside world, thereby gaining substantial revenue. The district has many educational institutes, many of which have produced eminent scholars over the years. B.B. High School, Dasarathpur High School, N.C. College, V.N. College, N.C. College, Biraja Women’s College, Biraja Law College, B.S. College, Sukinda College, A.P. College are some of the major educational institutes imparting quality education in the district, the latest being Jajati Keshari Medical College and Hospital – tertiary care teaching hospital. Jajpur Sub-Divisional Hospital was accredited as District Headquarter Hospital from 22.09.1993. Initially, it was a 65 bedded hospital. In the year 1998, Govt. of Odisha sanctioned an additional 100 beds for the District Headquarter Hospital along with a 20 bedded eye hospital, creation of the post of a dental specialist, a 10 bedded paediatric ward.
Jajati Keshari Medical College and Hospital was sanctioned to be set up in the industrially rich Jajpur district as a 500 Hundred Teaching Hospital with state of the art modern medical education, patient care and research. The medical college was named after Somavansi ruler, the famous ruler of ancient Odisha, Jajati Keshari, who ruled the ancient kingdom from 1025 to 1040 A.D. Jajati Keshari is credited to have built Abhinav Jajnagar, the modern Jajpur, as the capital of his kingdom. He is believed to have laid the foundation of the famous Lingaraj temple in Bhubaneswar besides building many other temples of Odisha. Naming of the medical college after Jajati Keshari is a humble tribute to this great historical personality who enhanced the glory of Odisha.
