Al-Farabi Kazakh National University was initially named after S.M.Kirov. Later in the year 1991, the name was changed and kept after Abu Nasir Al-Farabi. He was a great scientist, thinker, and scholar. He was the second teacher at the university.
In 1934 when Al-Farabi Kazakh National University was established, courses in four faculties have introduced the Faculties of Biology, Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry. In 1937, the courses in the Faculty of Humanities– the Faculty of Foreign Languages were introduced. A year later courses in the Faculty of Philology. In May 1941, as a result of joining the University of the Kazakh Communist Institute of Journalism courses in the Faculty of Journalism were introduced.
At Al Farabi Kazakh National University, in August 1947, courses in the Faculty of Geography were introduced, and in 1949 courses in the faculties of Philosophy and Economics. As a result of the joining of Alma-Ata institute of law in 1955, courses the Faculty of Law was introduced.
