Initially planned at the Raja Mirasdar Hospital, the campus was shifted to its present location on the behest of Chief Minister K. Kamaraj. With land donated by Yagappa Nadar family and funds from the Tanjore District Railway Cess Fund, the college began with 650 beds in the 1960s. Today, it has expanded into a 3,000-bed referral teaching hospital, serving Thanjavur and nearby districts.
